Electro-power-cell Energy Tech has officially been granted a patent by the China National Intellectual Property Administration for its invention titled “A Bipolar Plate for Preventing Bypass Current in AEM Electrolyzers.” This milestone marks another significant technological breakthrough for the company in the development of core components for AEM water electrolysis hydrogen production.
The AEM electrolyzer (Anion Exchange Membrane Electrolyzer) is emerging as a key direction in next-generation green hydrogen production. Combining the high current density of PEM electrolysis with the cost advantages of alkaline water electrolysis, it has become a focal point of industry attention. However, the commercialization of AEM water electrolysis faces several engineering challenges—among them, the bypass current issue is a critical bottleneck that limits both efficiency and safe operation.
Bypass currents can lead to:
Uneven current distribution, reducing hydrogen production efficiency
Localized overheating within the stack, accelerating material degradation
Increased system complexity and operational difficulty
To address this, Electro-power-cell Energy Tech independently designed and developed a new bipolar plate structure that prevents bypass current. By precisely guiding current flow and optimizing the porous interface impedance, the design effectively blocks unintended current paths, thereby significantly improving both current efficiency and operational stability of AEM electrolyzers.
The patented technology features the following core innovations:
Current-guiding channel design: Special geometric channels are introduced on the surface of the bipolar plate to concentrate the main current path
Integrated insulation zone layer: Insulating barrier materials are added to block undesired current leakage routes
Interface contact optimization: Microstructure regulation improves the uniformity of contact between the electrode and the plate, reducing the probability of side reactions
This combination of technologies not only addresses the engineering pain point of “current bypass,” but also provides a solid foundation for scalable stacking and system integration of AEM electrolyzers.
As a leading provider of green hydrogen system solutions in China, Electro-power-cell Energy Tech has long been focused on the development and deployment of critical equipment across the entire AEM water electrolysis value chain. The company has already established capabilities including:
High-performance AEM membrane electrode fabrication processes
Modular AEM electrolyzer system integration design
Intelligent control platform for hydrogen production systems
With the authorization of this bypass current-resistant bipolar plate patent, Electro-power-cell Energy Tech will continue to strengthen its independent intellectual property portfolio in core hydrogen technology components. The company will also deepen industrial collaboration with upstream and downstream partners, helping to accelerate the transition of AEM water electrolysis from the laboratory to engineering and commercial-scale deployment.
